Commonwealth Writers Call for Proposals in Anthology of Non-fiction from Africa – Deadline 20 April

Commonwealth Writers are inviting writers from Commonwealth African countries to submit proposals for a piece of creative non-fiction.

They are seeking stories from the Africa continent, by African writers in the form of creative non-fiction, including memoir, life-writing, literary reportage and essays.

The organisation is particularly interested in less-told stories from less-read writers. The stories will be part of an anthology edited by Ellah Wakatama Allfrey.

Interested Candidates are expected to prepare a proposal which should include the following 4 documents:
  1. Author CV (including nationality and gender, postal address, email address and contact telephone number)
  2. An outline of what you want to write and why (not more than 750 words)
  3. A copy of your creative non-fiction piece (3,000-6,000 words only) if already written or a sample of your non-fiction writing (not more than 2000 words)
  4. Tell us about your writing history (one A4 page MAX)
  • Proposal and story must be written in English with no subject restrictions.
  • No previously published work will be considered, including work published in anthologies, chapbooks or online.
  • You may be offered a commission, there may also be a small expenses fund for research expenses. Please state in your submission if you would need us to help with research expenses and what these would be.
  • Proposals to be sent to writers@commonwealth.int by 1pm (GMT) on 20 April with the subject heading: ‘NON FICTION ANTHOLOGY’.
  • Result of submission will be published by 8 May 2015. If you are offered a commission, you will be expected to complete your story by 30 July 2015. You will need to be available to work with the editor, as and when necessary, from August to November 2015.
  • The anthology will be published in the summer of 2016.
